[A] When this ordinary brown box arrived at my door, the words on the side got my attention. It said, “MAY CONTAIN AWESOME.” It was addressed to my son but I opened it anyway. I had to know what was in the box; maybe it was awesome, but maybe it wasn’t.
A few days later I read this verse in a book of devotionals. “All scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man (or woman) of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17, translation unknown, italics mine). The word that caught my attention this time was adequate, and then I remembered the box.
“God is not asking us to be awesome; He is equipping us with everything we need to be adequate – just enough. Our role is to love unconditionally, pray faithfully, and point constantly to the God who is so much more than enough.
When my children were young my husband traveled a lot so evenings were hard. My neighbor’s husband did too so we would spend the lonely evening hours swinging our kids in my backyard. One night I stayed in to get the boys ready for soccer while she played on the swings. I was weary of being alone so when the boys didn’t cooperate, I lost it. I know I yelled and threw a shoe–then I realized the windows were open and my friend had heard it all. I loved her and wanted her to know the God who loved her too and I wanted her to see him in me; I was sure that in my melt down she had seen anything but. When we saw each other next she cried as she told me that if I was good enough for God, she must be good enough for him too. When she witnessed my tantrum the awesome mask I’d been trying to wear slipped and she saw adequate and real which is what she needed to see all along.
Awesome means “inspiring reverence, admiration, awe and even fear,” but we have overused it to the point that it has become slang for anything good. At best it means impressive. Sadly, we are awed about so much we forget to be in awe of the God of it all and He doesn’t ask awesome of us. He asks us to be the kind of women who bring the little we are to Him, out just enough, and let Him fill the gaps with the more than enough of that is Jesus then in our simple adequacy, we contain awesome.Welcome to your blog post.
